Colón isn’t a very old city and hence various history lovers that head towards it might be disappointed with no historical monuments being part of it. This does not mean that you will find nothing to enjoy here. Colón is famous for different natural tourist hot spots which have become famous due to the hard work of the government. The only downside with this city is its drug problem due to which many violent incidents have popped up.

Colón Sights-Gatun Escuelas (locks)

The importance of Colón increased when the famous Panama Canal was built in order to help the city get connected with many other major neighboring cities and also to promote business in this city. This huge Panama Canal boasts of 3 sets of double layered locks on the Atlantic and the Pacific sides which have lately become an important tourist attraction due to the latest technology used.

These are situated around 10 kilometers away from the city of Colón and in the Gatun area. From this location you can enjoy the sight of various Atlantic locks lowering and rising as different ships pass through the canal. You can also enjoy swimming facilities that are available around the lock and the sight of 90 year old technology running these canals.

Colón Sights-Zona Libre

To bring Colón out of its economical disaster its local government decided to start a city within the city which was later on named Zona Libre. This sub city covers one fifth of the total area of Colón. In this region around 1,600 companies sell various products all tax free thus increasing the importance of this region. It is a must visit shopping hub for every tourist that hits Colón.

Colón Sights-Panama Canal Railroad

Located in the proximity of Zona Libre this historical railroad is a must see sight for tourists, considering the fact that it was the major reason why this city of Colón actually took shape.
