Karachi
The former capital, and largest city of Pakistan, Karachi is found on the Arabian Sea, near the Indus River delta. It is the chief seaport for Pakistan, an industrial center and a unique city in various ways.
At independence, the city had a population of 500,000 but has today way exceeded the 10 million mark. The city has an area of about 3,366 sq. km with about 18 towns and 6 cantonment boards. Though the city is located on a semi-arid zone, its marine affects offers it a moderate climate.
Climate of the city
The hottest months of the year are during May and June where temperature reaches heights of 43.4 degree centigrade. The coldest month is in January, where temperature drops to as low as 5 degrees. The average annual rainfall in Karachi is approximately 7 inches.
Until 1725 A.D., Karachi was a barren piece of land, surrounded by the Arabian Sea’s blue water on three sides. Only some fishermen lived in mud huts, which gradually increased in number to form a village, Kalachi-jo-Ghote.
Places to visit
Today, Karachi is the city we all know of Pakistan that offers numerous places to go to do numerous things. This is because there is a club or organization in all parts of the city, to guarantee you a good time in the city. There are also many historical buildings to visit in Karachi like the Tomb of Quaid-e-Azam, The Empress Market, Sindh assembly buildings, Karachi Port Trust and City Courts.
Other famous spots in Karachi are the PSO building, Habib Bank Plaza which is the tallest city of not only Karachi, but also of Pakistan, MCB Tower and Avari Towers. Restaurants here offer cuisine from the world over to keep whet your appetite at all times.
The clean and golden beaches are worth a visit here, while there are many theme parks, Country and Water parks, ship breaking tours and other activities to keep you busy here.
The shopper’s paradise
To the shopper, Karachi is synonymous to paradise where you get to buy the finest products at reasonable rates. Some of the things you can buy here are furniture, crystal works, classical stitched clothing, paintings, marble products, automobile, watches, best textile products and much more. In addition to this, there are many handicrafts you can buy here like beautiful carpets and rugs with rare designs, hand made by artisans.
Karachi the educational and industrial hub
The many schools, colleges and institutes offering courses in science, engineering, information technology and arts all make Karachi famous for its educational network. Besides the many university campuses found here, Karachi also hosts many international university campuses, to attract international students.
Most of the important banks, insurance companies, financial institutes and corporate houses are found in Karachi. Not only does the major money market and currency dealer work from here, the Karachi Stock Exchange, the largest trading center for equity and debt securities is also located here. There are also many local and international shipping companies found because of Karachi being a port city.
