Saltillo Travel-Guide – The Best Mexican City

This Saltillo travel-guide refers to the capital city of the northern Mexican state of Coahuila and it will give you all the basic information you need to know when travelling in the area. Saltillo is just 90 kilometers west of the larger and more impressive Monterrey, so you can always take a day trip and explore that area as well. Although it has more than 633.000 inhabitants and a metropolitan area that exceeds a population of 725.000, Saltillo is only the 20th largest metropolitan area in the country. Still, despite of this fact, the living standards in Saltillo are among the highest in the whole of Mexico and the city has even been ranked the best Mexican city to live in.

Although the city is located in a desert area the temperatures are not that high and there are winds blowing due to its 1600 meters elevation and The People’s Hill (El Cerro del Pueblo), a large hill with a four-meter cross that overlooks the city. Getting around the city is easy as they have a very good bus system and plenty of cabs. If you want to go outside the city there are roads that also function very well, and the Plan de Guadalupe International Airport has daily flights to Mexico City and weekly ones to Texas. There are also many universities in the city, most of which focus on technological and industrial research. Economically, Saltillo is known worldwide for its famous tiles, but also for the colored sarapes, typical Mexican clothes that are hand woven to this day. The fast technological process that took over the city has been much criticized due to lack of proper planning, and 62% of Mexico’s total number of trucks is assembled in Saltillo. There is also a General Motors and a Chrysler factory that function as massive employers for the people in the area.

Saltillo was home to numerous Mexican intellectuals during the 20th century and it is still considered a cultural city despite of its heavy industrialization. There are two very important museums in the city that have to be mentioned in every Saltillo travel-guide, namely the Bird Museum and the Desert Museum, both of which offer comprehensive and extensive information about their subjects of focus. Pink marble decorates the Colonial Centre of the city, while an artificial lake shaped like the Mexican Republic can be found in the city’s largest park, Alameda Zaragoza. There is also a cathedral that was built in the 18th century and that gives the best example of Mexican religious architecture that was inspired by the Spaniards, but is not as lavish.
