The city of Oaxaca has also been nicknamed as “la Verde Antequera” (which means green Antequera). This nickname has been chosen due to the prior name of this city which was Nueva Antequera. Another reason for the city getting this nickname was the presence of various structures which contain green stones as their major building materials.

The city of Oaxaca is very famous amongst the tourists of the city due to the great cuisines which various food outlets of the city offer. A very complex sauce which is famous in the city of Oaxaca is moles. The origin of this sauce dates back to the Spanish rulers who had ruled the country of Mexico decades ago. The city of Oaxaca is also famous for Colorado (red), Negro (black), chichilo, coloradito (faint red), Amarillo (yellow), verde (green), and mancha mantels.
