Monterrey is the municipality and capital city of Nuevo León (a North Eastern state of Mexico). Another name for Monterrey is Sultana del Norte (which means Lady of North). The population of Monterrey proper is around one million while the population of Greater Monterrey (the metropolitan area of Monterrey) has a population of around 3.8 million.

An interesting river, Santa Catarina River, which remains dry throughout the year, actually flows underground and constantly divides the city into two halves. The southern part of Monterrey is covered by Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range, the western side of the city is covered by Cerro de las Mitras (which means mountain of Mitres), the eastern side of the city is covered by Cerro de la Silla (which is actually a Saddle Mountain), and the southern side of River Santa Catarina separates the city from San Pedro Garza García.

An important tourist spot is the Bishop Palace which is built north of Santa Catarina River. This palace was heavily used during the American-Mexican War.

Climate is characterized by hot summers when the highest temperature reaches 35 degrees Celsius and the average minimum temperature reaches approximately 23 degree Celsius. Winters aren’t heavily cold and the most suitable climate is during autumn and spring. One won’t find Monterrey facing heavy rainfall although it is prominent between the months of May and September. Snowfall rarely occurs in Monterrey.

Carretera Nacional (which is also known as Panamerican Highway) is an important road of Monterrey. It connects Mexico City to Nuevo Laredo and Carretera Interoceánica is another important road which passes through Monterrey and connects the port of Mazatlán to Matamoros. Three important highways (namely 45, 40, and 57) also pass through Monterrey.

Lanes especially for buses connect Monterrey to the deeper Mexico, to the border of U.S. and to  the United States. Three important railway lines also run through Monterrey. These railway lines are: Monterrey-Tampico, Nuevo Laredo-Mexico City, and Monterrey-Pacific.

A local airport namely Del Norte International Airport and a major airport namely General Mariano Escobedo International Airport are also the part of Monterrey. General Mariano Escobedo International Airport is estimated to serve more than 6.5 million passengers every year.

The most famous food of Monterrey is cabrito al pastor, which is kid goat that is cooked over embers. One more famous food of Monterrey is machacado con huevo which is prepared from dry beef, eggs, and salsa. Some other foods which are said to date back to the Crypto-Judaism days are capirotada dessert and semita.
