Los Cabos is a beautiful city located on the tip of the Mexican peninsula. Its history spans 14,000 years, when it is said that the first people here were Europeans. However, though there were people living in Cabo San Lucas for thousands of years, it was only at the start of the 20th century that a fishing village actually developed here.
It was exactly in the year 1917 that a buoyant floor was created by an American establishment to catch tuna. Ten years later, the same company started the Compania de Productos Marinos SA, and this is when Los Cabos village actually started growing. Pearls were soon sighted in the Sea of Cortez, and with this, various people sprang to visit Los Cabos.
Los Cabos as a Fishing Haven
Two parts of the city, Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas were together known as Los Cabos. However over time, the irregular water supply to Cabo San Lucas lead to its underdevelopment. In fact, the population of Los Cabos was a meager 400 till the 1930s.
It was only a little later that Los Cabos gained popularity as a sports fishing haven. Before, people could reach Los Cabos only with a small plane, using a long range yacht or if you were ready, by traveling across 1,000 miles of rutted roads.
Actually, it was after the World War II that the elite in Southern California learnt about Los Cabos and started investing here. The beautiful hotel Las Cruces was such an investment, and was completed by the year 1950. This marked the start of development in Los Cabos.
The Rising Potential of Los Cabos
With the building of the Peninsular Highway in 1974, Los Cabos was connected to Middle America. But it was the Mexican architect Manuel Dmaz Rivera who initiated the flow of tourist to Los Cabos by buying 250 acres of land to use for fishing tournaments that would draw international participants.
Seeing the potential in Los Cabos, the Mexican tourist agency and some international developers invested money in the region. This lead to the construction of an international airport here and a pipeline for fresh water to Los Cabos.. Lots of investment has also been made for the development of golf where 108 holes are already open and playing.
Sportsmen come to Los Cabos to participate in international competitions in international fishing, game bird hunting and outstanding diving. In addition to this, there is a steady flow of tourists to the region waiting to relax on the beautiful beaches, scenery and weather of Los Cabos.
