Irapuato is a city in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, lying on the Irapuato River, a tributary of the Lerma River. According to the 2000 census, it had a population of 440,134, living in an area of 845,16 km² which is 2.8% of the area of the state. The city is known for its strawberries and the raising of pigs and cattle.
In the pre-hispanic era it was inhabited by the Tarascans (Purépecha) and it was named 'Jiricuato', which meant 'the place with houses'.
Education
The city of Irapuato is home to some private universities, and a single public university. The Higher Technological Institute of Irapuato, known as ITESI, is the only public institution decentralized from the state government. Among the private universities stand the Irapuato Campus of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM), the Irapuato Institute, the Irapuato Campus of the Quetzalcoatl University and a branch of the University of Léon. Furthermore, the city is home to a research center of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies, CINVESTAV.
