With 15 km (9 mi) wideness and a length of 53 km (33 mi), this beautiful island, having developed only 3%, is a paradise of low hills, rocky beaches dotted with palm trees and crystal-clear waters. The roads are paved, but you have to avoid the dirt roads because, especially in the rainy season, the floods make these roads impassable. So proceed with great caution, especially after a rain.
The rainy season, also known as the hurricane season, lasts from June until October. Temperature remains constant at 80° F and reaches 90° F during the months of July and August, period when the air gets humid and hot. If you want to bath, then you should know that water temperature varies from upper 70° F to low 80° F. Although cold fronts coming from the north can cause temperatures to fall during the winter months, Cozumel is less affected because of its location near the mainland.
Cozumel was a territory of the Maya people. It is said that this island was the home of goddess of fertility and love, Ixchel. The Mayans built temples to worship the goddess and in return they received Ixchel’s favourite bird, a sign of good fortune. As a result of this, the Mayan named the island "The Land of the Swallows".
An icon of Cozumel, Chankanaab National Marine Park is a place where you can enjoy all kind of activities. After a short taxi ride, you and your family can spend quality time snorkeling or just lying in the sun. But you should know that Chankanaab National Park has expensive amenities. If you are more interested in history, then you should visit the Maya ruins. It’s worth sightseeing them.
Another natural attraction of this island is represented by Punta Sur Ecological Reserve. One of the park's attractions is an old lighthouse located in Punta Celarain. The reservation includes also Colombia Lagoon; here you can see endangered species of animals, among which marine turtles.
You may never want to leave this island treasure, so choose to enjoy activities both below and above water. Cozumel offers enough daytime activities to make you want to prolong your vacation.
Being a small island off the coast of Yucatan Peninsula, with its breathtaking underwater scenery, Cozumel is the perfect place to scuba dive. But you can enjoy a great variety of water sports: snorkeling, kayaking, deep-sea fishing.
