Ciudad Del Carmen History, Mexico

The current name for this city was given by Virgin of Carmen somewhere during 16th July 1717. As per various theories Virgin of Carmen was the sole protector of the island on which today the city of Ciudad del Carmen is flourishing. It was the Spanish Army that had conquered the island and ousted all the pirates who used to control the city of Ciudad del Carmen during those days. This Spanish Army was being led by Alonso Felipe de Andrade. After lengthy fights against various pirate groups finally Alonso Felipe de Andrade was able to take control of this island and govern it as per his requirements.

Even though the Spanish Army finally had control over this island which was being called as Ciudad del Carmen still Virgin of Carmen remained to be the protector of the island. This happened as the locals who used to live in the city of Ciudad del Carmen had their trust over Virgin of Carmen and for them he was their only protector. Since then till today Virgin of Carmen and brave stories related to him have been appreciated by the locals of Ciudad del Carmen. Every year many street shows and cultural programs are organized where stories related to Virgin of Carmen are recited. One such cultural program is the annual fair which is organized every year in the memory of Virgin of Carmen. These cultural programs and religious festivals which are organized every year in the memory of Virgin of Carmen have become an important reason why huge number of tourists regularly visits the city.

This was the history of Ciudad del Carmen after the Spanish Rulers took control of the city. In its early years Ciudad del Carmen was the center that used to connect Mayan Civilization and Aztec Civilization. The first ever settlements which actually were the root cause for laying the foundation of Ciudad del Carmen were those of pre - Hispanic times. It was the mid 16th century when the island of Ciudad del Carmen was full of local pirates. They used to use this island as the major center where they would repair their ships and also the place where they would plan attacks to keep away the Spanish Rulers.
