The Paradise of Sun and Sand With its immaculate coastlines and white beaches and abundant beachfront hotels, Cancun is far from the deserted island it once was. Four decades ago, nearly no one had ever heard of this region in the Caribbean. At present, Cancun is one of the world’s most renowned tourist destinations. This article describes some of the many sights of this tropical paradise.

Beaches

Without a doubt, the main attraction in Cancun is its beaches. Waters of turquoise color, a line of hotels, and expansive stretches of white sands all make for a beach lover’s paradise. The glitzy Hotel Zone, offers plentiful accommodations for tourists and many well-known theme restaurants and nightclubs.  There is much to do aside from bathing in the Cancun waters or basking in the sun. The Caribbean is to the north, where kayaking and windsurfing are very popular.

The Nichupte Lagoon, which can be found between the island the mainland, is an ideal spot for water sports. Many tourists enjoy sailing, parasailing, and jet skiing in these areas.  Diving and snorkeling are popular activities in Cancun.

There is Cozumel – the diving capital of Cancun – some forty miles south of the Hotel Zone which can be reached via ferry.

The Mayan Reef on Mexico’s Caribbean offers snorkeling right off the beach, while other dive spots such as Palancar, El Bajito, Manchones, and Chitales can be found close by. The Cave of Sleeping Sharks is also one to explore, where divers can swim among the little sharks. Aside from these, deep sea fishing is also an enjoyed attraction.

For those looking to explore, cruises such as the Caribbean Funday Cruise, Sunshine Cruise, and Treasure Hunt Cruise take visitors to more expansive adventures. The Sunshine Cruise takes explorers to Isla Mujeres and gives them a chance to swim amid the giant sea turtles.

Mayan Ruins

Aside from the sandy coast, Cancun also offers visitors a view of its native past. Archeological ruins serve as a testament to the highly advanced and evolved Mayan civilization. The Ruinas El Rey can be found in the Hotel Zone, while another site, El Meco, can be found on the mainland. The impressive ruins of the city of Chichen Itza, in Yucatan – the Mayan Archeological Zone – is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Other Attractions

Visitors to Cancun can choose from the plethora of spas, golf courses, and shopping sites that this paradise has to offer. There are the Hilton Park Golf Club, Pok ta Pok Club de Golf, and Melia Cancun Golf Club in the Hotel Zone.

If it is shopping and dining that visitors seek, there is the Plaza Kukulcan, Cancun’s largest shopping mall. With over 300 shops, bowling lanes, movie theaters, and restaurants, there is hardly any room to run out of options. Flamingo Plaza is plentiful in international restaurants and boutiques. For a more cultural experience, downtown Cancun stages the classic bullfight at Plaza de Toros Cancun. On occasion, dances may also be enjoyed here. The month of April brings the celebration of Cancun’s founding boasting great activities held all over town.
