Port Louis Sights and Landmarks Guide, Mauritius

Port Louis has a rich colonial heritage and a number of old and historic buildings redolent of a colonial origin have been conserved to preserve the colonial past.

Fort Adelaide

The other name for it is LA CITADELLE. It is a fortification erected in 1835 by the British. This colossal fort dominates the city’s skyline and towers over the entire city, thus offering a magnificent aerial view of the rest of the city’s landscape and architecture.

Moka Range

The other natural sight that you may enjoy visiting is the Moka Range of mountains which surround the capital city on most sides. The popular peaks in this hilly range are PIETER BOTH and LE POUCE from where you can get a bird’s eye view of the whole city since both these peaks rise 800 meters above the sea level approximately.

Champ de Mars

This is the second oldest race course in the southern hemisphere and the oldest one in the Indian Ocean region and was established in 1812. This is definitely worth a visit.

Your travel itinerary must include the Port Louis waterfront which boasts of unmatched scenic beauty and LES CASERNES which is the other name for the police barracks.

Any trip to Port Louis would be incomplete without a visit to the three museums - MAURITIUS STAMP MUSEUM, the BLUE PENNY MUSEUM and THE MAURITIUS STAMP MUSEUM; the old and historic Port Louis theatre housed in an imposing building; the Port Louis bazaar; the CAUDAN WATERFRONT; the historic PLACE d’ARMES which serves as the gateway to Port Louis.

Avenues with tall palm trees that lined up on their side are the most familiar landmarks of the city. They are ensconced deep in the heart of the capital in the vicinity of the STATE BANK TOWER. You can also visit the oldest post office in Mauritius situated near the Caudan Waterfront, which also happens to be the biggest of the post offices here.

The other places of interest worth a visit for their unique visual splendor and breathtaking picture are the central banking hub and the elegant avenue leading up to it, the Chinese burial ground, the Jummah Mosque, RUE DESFORGES, CHINA TOWN, the city centre with its tall skyscrapers(surprising for such a small city), the Royal college grounds, the Loreto college grounds, the campus of the four best schools in Port Louis, KADAFI Square where you can sample delectable authentic local food and the harbor.
