Kuala Terengganu Sights and Landmarks Guide, Malaysia

Receiving its city status only on Janauary 01, 2008, Kuala Terengganu is the capital of the state of Terengganu, Malaysia. It is surrounded by the South China Sea on three sides. The name means 'the river mouth of Terangganu”, as the river with the same name meets the ocean at this point.

Kuala Terengganu has its history dating back to the 15th century when the first street called Kampung China was established by a family of Chinese traders who traded between China and Malay. The city is located 500 miles north east of Kuala Lumpur. It is connected with other towns via a good road network. The ferry service over the Terengganu River is well maintained too. There is also a domestic airport.

Malaysian Airlines, AirAsia and Firefly provide their service to the city. Long distance buses are available for Kuala Lumpur, Pehang, Johor Baharu, Kota Bahru, Malacca and Quantan. International bus service is available to Singapore.

There are quite a few places in Kuala Terengganu that are of tourist interest. You can have a taste of the local life at the Terengganu State Museum. Pulau Duyung is a fishing village where you can see old wooden mansions and shipyards. Seberang Takir has a display of cottage industries like batik. You can see hundred years old buildings in Chinatown.

Other places of interest are the sultan's palace and the floating mosque. Visit the sprawling Pasar Besar, the open air market to buy fresh products. Bring back silk and cotton batik sarongs as souvenirs.

You can taste some interesting cuisine while at Kuala Terengganu. Try out the traditional Malay cakes, and Keropok lekor, a local favorite snack. Fresh fruit juices and coconut water are very popular as drinks. They are available at Pasar Besar and with local vendors. The fruit juices are served in big mugs known as 'air buah gelas besar '.

Accommodation is available from top range to basic hotels. A very interesting place to stay in Pulau Duyung is the Awi Yellow House. It is a stilt house on the river with a shared kitchen, set among lush natural beauty. You can go visiting Redang Island from Kuala Terengganu. Redang Island is a beautiful island in Malaysia known for its scuba diving facilities. This year is a good time to visit Kuala Terengganu as their government has just launched “visit Terengganu” campaign offering many programs to attract their guest.
