Alma-ata Travel Guide, Kazakhstan

The city of Alma - Ata (now famous by the name of Almaty) is amongst the most populated cities in the country of Kazakhstan. As per the latest census of year September 2008 the population for the city of Alma - Ata was around 1350000 inhabitants. This is actually 8 percent of the total population that lives in the country if Kazakhstan.

The city of Alma - Ata was the capital city for the country of Kazakhstan between the years 1929 and 1998 but it was after this time period that the tag of capital city was taken away from the city of Alma - Ata and was given to Astana. Even though the tag of capital city was taken away from the city of Alma - Ata yet this city is still the major commercial hub for the country of Kazakhstan.

As per the census of year 2003 the percentage of Kazakhs in the city of Alma - Ata was around 44 percent. Around 40 percent of the locals are of Russian origin, around 6 percent Uyghur, around 2 percent Tatar, around 2 percent Korean, around 1.5 percent Ukrainian, and over 0.5 percent Germans. This reflects that along with the real Kazakhs the city of Alma - Ata has people from many other neighboring countries.

In terms of education the city of Alma - Ata has grown immensely in last couple of decades. There are around 10 government funded universities in the city of Alma - Ata which provide quality education for its students. Other then universities there are many other national level institutes that attract students from the rest of the nation. These institutes are famous for running unique study programs other then general courses and this is the reason why they have become quite famous in the country of Kazakhstan.

The city of Alma - Ata has become an important financial hub for the country of Kazakhstan. Recently the RFCA (better known as Regional Financial Center of Almaty City) was opened up in this city due to its increased participation in international level businesses. RFCA was a intelligent step take by the government of Alma - Ata so as to decrease the dependence of Alma - Ata on natural resources and attract foreign investments in large numbers. This step of Alma - Ata government did bring in positive results as many international level companies have already entered the market of Alma - Ata.
