One of the oldest cities in the world, Rome has been dubbed ‘the eternal city’ and ranks high in the list of the most preferred holiday destinations in the world.

The Colosseum is on every tourist’s agenda, and for good reason. A day pass costs 11 euros, but if you want to take your time exploring, get a seven day pass for 22 euros instead. This gives you access to the Colosseum as well as everything from Palatine Hill to the catacombs. A guided tour is not really recommended since the queues are endless, and you don’t really get to know anything from the guides that you can’t get out of your travel book or printed city guide. Next on your agenda should definitely be the Pantheon, the almost two millennia old temple that still hosts church services. If you’re into museums, don’t miss out on the Capitoline, open every day from 9.00 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. The Capitoline houses some of the finest collections anywhere in the world, and also features a gorgeous piazza between the museum’s two buildings that was designed by Michelangelo.

Shopping in Rome can be a delight, no matter what your budget may be. Via Condotti features the more exclusive designer outlets, while more affordable items can be found at Via Cola di Rienzo. July is a good time to find real bargains at sales in the start of the summer season. While eating out, try the wood-oven baked authentic pizzas available in the evenings, and lattes at the roadside cafes. To drink, don’t miss out on local wines and the fresh spring water from (designated) fountains.

Rome has white taxis, and fares on some routes are fixed, such as from the Leonardo da Vinci airport to the city center. The taxis have fare meters attached, so there is no need to worry about bargaining. Be careful to avoid unlicensed taxi and limousine operators. While going around the city, it is best to avoid driving a car as the traffic can be unmanageable. A good option is to rent a scooter, which costs around forty euros a day. Exploring Rome on foot can also be a rewarding experience, and buses are an inexpensive way to see the many sights that the city has to offer. If you’re on foot, beware of the traffic since crossing roads can be a near impossible endeavor. You can also opt for a scenic tram route when you want to pay a visit to the Vatican and the Colosseum.
