Pisa Travel Guide – General Information
This Pisa travel guide will give you an insight into what the Italian city is all about, starting with its world renowned leaned tower to other less known but equally interesting peculiarities. Pisa is located in the province of Tuscany, central Italy, and it is the capital city of the Province of Pisa. It stands on the banks of the Arno River just before it flows into the Ligurian Sea. It has a population of 87.000 and a surface of 185 sq kilometers and it is characterized by a mild Mediterranean climate. In Pisa there are lots of historical sites that speak loads of the city’s past and several impressive bridges across the Arno River.
Pisa Travel Guide – Transportation
You can get to Pisa by plane, as it is home to the Galileo Galilei Airport, the biggest one in Tuscany. There are hundreds of national and international flights every week and most low cost companies travel to Pisa, so getting there by plane will be cheap and easy. There are also trains that come to the city from Florence and Lucca (more than one train an hour) so your connectivity to nearby Italy is assured at all times. Once you get there you can easily walk from the train station to the Piazza del Duomo (also known as the Piazza dei Miracoli), where you will find the famous Leaning Tower together with the Dome and the Baptistery. As the city is very small, the walk itself will be a pleasure and there are many valuable architectural sites you are going to encounter on your way. However, if you are interested in a day trip, this Pisa travel guide directs you to nearby Genoa as it is the perfect place!
Pisa Travel Guide – Interesting facts
The main sporting activity in Pisa is football and their team, Pisa Calcio, plays in the Italian Serie B with a quite prolific history. One of the most important things about the city is its University, which can’t be ignored when referring to Pisa. It has over 60.000 students which practically double the city’s population and animate the streets and nightlife, organize parties and concerts and cultural events all year long. You’ll also find lots of bazaars and specialized shops throughout the city, with popular crafts and designer fashion boutiques. If you want to eat something, be sure you wisely choose the area, as the restaurants around the tower usually offer poor quality for high prices. Try some of the famous biscotti on one of the side streets instead, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
