Naples should feature on your agenda if you have the time to explore more than just Rome and Milan. A less typical tourist destination than some of Rome’s more illustrious holiday hotspots, Naples is ideal for those looking to immerse themselves a little deeper in the cultural vastness that is the Roman heritage.

Close to Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii, Naples offers day tours to the sites of these historical disaster struck areas. Half day trips are also available, as well as a three hour trip to Pompeii. Tours are a great way to get the quick lowdown on the city, but you can opt to explore it yourself for a more leisurely experience that’s focused on what you want to see.

If you’re there for a few days, it’s a good idea to take a guided tour on your first day and then return at leisure to the spots that you want to explore further. If you’re doing the sightseeing rounds, make sure you get the Campania artecard, which is easily available at news stalls, travel agencies and online as well. Its costs start at 13 euros and vary depending on what you opt for, and it gains you museum admissions as well as other discounts.

The Castell dell’ovo is one of the most famous castles in the country, and gets its name from the famous egg that the poet Virgil, according to legend, left hidden underground in a tomb in the castle. According to the myth, if the egg breaks, a curse will fall upon the castle. If you’re into museums, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, one of the most well known museums in the world, features the remains of the civilization in Pompeii, with fascinating relics of its people’s everyday lives as they were two thousand years ago.

Walking around the city on foot is one of the best ways to soak in the many splendors that Naples has to offer. Walking down the Spaccanapoli is a great way to take in the churches and the ancient architecture, as well as the art galleries. The traffic is sheer havoc anyway! Naples is the birth place of pizza, especially the margherita, which is said to be the original pizza. Try any pizza place at Via dei Tribunali to get an authentic taste of pizza. For drinks at trendy upcoming places that come alive after dinner time, try the bars at Piazza Bellini and Piazza San Domenico Maggiore.
