One of the fashion capitals of the world and also among Italy’s most illustrious cities, Milan is a tourist’s delight with everything that it has to offer. Milan shares in the historical heritage of the Roman Empire, but is also one of the most contemporary cities in Europe.
Milan is well known for its many museums, and two of the finest are Pinacoteca di Brera and Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. The Sforzesco Castle is also definitely worth a visit, with its extensive collection of historical musical instruments and Egyptian art. Milan also has several historical churches that showcase Roman culture and architecture. The Duomo is one of the finest, with a breathtaking view from the roof. It is seven centuries old and features thousands of statues and spires.
The main shopping area is the quadrilatero della moda, bordered by four famous squares on all sides. Montenapoleone Street and Manzoni Street are among the high profile shopping districts where designer brands have their showrooms. Cheaper but still alluring items can be found at Vercelli Avenue. Fiera di Senigallia is Milan’s famous flea market, and not to be missed out on for bargains and quaint items. In terms of dining, Milan offers many native as well as multicultural restaurants. Try risotto if you’re tired of pizza. Any Brek outlet offers a great café experience, and several are available across the city to sustain you during your wanderings. The Aperitivo or happy hour is offered during early evenings at most restaurants across the city, and gives you great value for money as most outlets throw in all you can eat snacks for free at this time. Among the best bars are Exploit Café and Bar Bianco. Many of the upscale bars require reservations in advance. Breakfast at most cafes is inexpensive as well as enjoyable. Some of the most trendy bars and clubs are at Como Avenue.
For outdoor activities, Lake Como and Lake Garda are wonderful spots with opportunities for boating. Biking is also a popular activity and gives you the chance to enjoy the sights and the villas and smaller localities outside city limits.
Parking is a problem and taxis cannot be flagged down, and have to be called for in advance or taken from one of the designated stands across the city. Walking is a good option as it also gives you time to enjoy some of the many roadside cafes. Buses and streetcars are also a good way to get around.
