Florence is one of the bigger italian cities, should shouldn´t absolutely miss.
It offers a wide range of history, a beautiful historical city centre and a lof of possibilities to spent money in good shops.
If you want to go there, i would suggest train, because the traffic situation is bad in the city center, as thought you can easily reach the city itself good by the highways. Take yourself time, to look at the different places. The best would be to spent at least one weekend there.
