Waterford, Ireland - Overview

Blessed with a glaring coastline, the county of Waterford was established back in 914 AD. The county attracts a lot of tourist is also due to the fact that is the oldest city in Ireland. This is also interesting to note that Waterford is the largest city that has retained its Viking-derived name, Vedrarfjord, even to this day.

Popularly known the world over as the ‘Crystal County’, Waterford is the place from where originates the Waterford Crystal, a lifestyle product displaying keen workmanship. The glass making industry of the city has proved to be a legacy. It is since 1783 that glass has been manufactured here.

A visit to the city of Waterford brings back the memory of Viking times. In the 15th century, an outer wall was erected on the west side of the city. Even today, Waterford has managed to retain much of its city walls. Waterford’s city walls have proved to be a major draw for travelers from all across the world.
