The city of Pontianak is famous for the food industry and the kinds of food items that this city produces. The major products which these days become the backbone for the city of Pontianak are pepper, palm oil, rubber, tobacco, and sugar. In its early years the city of Pontianak happened to be the hub where gold was extracted in large numbers. Soon almost all the gold from the mines of Pontianak was extracted and hence this business died down.
