The city of Palembang is the capital city for South Sumatra Province (which is also famous by the name of Sumatera Selatan) of Indonesia. South Sumatra Province is actually located on an Island somewhere in the south of Indonesia. The city of Palembang is situated on the sides of River Musi and is around 200 kilometers away from the ocean.

In no time the population of the city has touched 600000 inhabitants. The reason behind the huge jump in population for Palembang has been its growing economy due to increase in number of tourists in the city. Although there have been many other industrial factors which have helped the growing economy of Palembang yet the most important of all has been the inflow of tourists.

The lush green surroundings with beautiful natural scenes is enough to attract huge number if national as well as foreign tourists into the city of Palembang. The traditional food called as Pempek is also very famous amongst the tourists. It is actually a cake made of fish and eaten with Cuka Sauce. International food outlets like McDonalds are also widely available in the city of Palembang for those tourists who don’t find themselves comfortable with local food.

The houses in which the locals of Palembang reside are built in unique styles. Piles are used to construct these houses and they face water thus providing awesome scenic beauty from them. As the city is situated on the sides of River Musi (which is full of water throughout the year) hence the location for these houses becomes much more beautiful.

The city of Palembang has also been famous in the media as Venice of East due to the houses which are built on the sides of the River Musi. You will surely find locals diving in River Musi with dreams of search for gold. Same is the reason why the word Limbang (which means searching for gold in soil of water) was used to name this city of Palembang. It is said that the real name of this city was Palimbang but the locals of the city somehow started pronouncing it as Palembang and this is how the city name became Palembang.

The city of Palembang is also famous for its religious festivals like Musi Festival and Sriwijaya Festival being the most important ones.
