Medan Travel Guide, Indonesia

After the popular cities of Surabaya and Jakarta comes the city of Medan in terms of population. The city of Medan happens to be the largest city outside Java Island and is part of Indonesia. As per the census of year 2000 the population of Medan was around 2 million inhabitants.

The city of Medan is famous for multiple cultures that are living together in the city. The way these people gel with each other and respect each other’s culture is the uniqueness of the city which has given the city a respectable name in Indonesia. One will find the mix of Chinese, Batak, Indian, Javanese, Acehnese, Madurese, Sundanese, and Minang as the major chunks who contribute towards the population of Medan. These people had traveled to the city to earn livings and slowly they merged themselves in the lifestyle of Medan.

The variation in ethnicity of locals has helped the city of Medan to present multiple cuisines for the tourist that hit the city. In every corner of the city you will find food outlets with foods that will be best for your appetite. With so many food outlets, you won’t have to sleep empty stomach. The Javanese culture has brought in the sweet cuisines, the Batak culture has brought in the delicious grilled pork of Batak, the Indian culture has brought in the spicy Indian food, and the Chinese culture has brought in the tasty Chinese noodles. This reflects why the locals of Medan love to eat different style of food every other day. Same is the reason why the city of Medan is considered to be the heart of food tourism.

The touch of Dutch culture can easily be found in the city of Medan. The huge Dutch style houses are now being used as government offices. These houses have huge parks and lawns along with them which is a mark of Dutch style housing.

The motorized rickshaws (tri cycles) are the most convenient option for moving from one place within the city to the other. These have motors installed in them and are fairly cheap. Other modes of transports are Taxis and Sudako (better known as mini buses). The city of Medan has a toll highway which connects Tanjubmorawa and Belawan to the city of Medan.
