In Medan, they truly do close down the streets as the sun sets. However, it’s not because there is nothing to do, but because they make room for the locals to mingle and have a good time. The main street of Kesawan Square is open for business as usual during the day. However, when it gets dark, they blockade it off and set up tables so people can suit and relax to enjoy an evening of fun. Kesawan Square is a food court located outside, and it provides the perfect environment for a night of fun and friendship.

Another great location is the Merdeka Walk; here you can meander through the various stalls and vendors tables looking for your latest treasure. There is live music every day, and the area features street performers who love to entertain. This is a very popular hangout for locals and tourist alike, and it features some of the best restaurants in town. The area is open and thriving everyday up until 2am.

There are also quite a few bars and nightclubs in the area. They offer many types of music and most have excellent dance floors. While these hang outs cannot rival with the larger cities in Indonesia, they are quite a good time. The drinks are always flowing and the music is always lively.

If you search for a laid back and relaxing way to spend your evening, you should check out the local scenery. Nearby to Medan is Toba Lake, it is a beautiful place to visit. However, for the best experience, have a picnic at dusk along the beautiful banks and have your breath taken away by the sheer beauty of the sunset. While Medan may be a smaller city, it does offer a big selection of late night fun.
