Popular for its cool weather and serene surroundings, Malang, Indonesia is a great tourist destination. Malang is currently the fourth largest city in Indonesia. This city is home to about 3.5 million people. In East Java, the province where Malang is found, the city is known as “Paris van East Java.” This article presents an overview of the tranquil city of Malang, Indonesia.

History

 

Malang was previously the center of administration of the Singosari and Kanjuruhan Kingdom. In 1614, the city was taken over by the Mataram Kingdom. It was later handed over to the Dutch rule.

Under the colonization of the Dutch, Malang saw a lot of changes. It became a popular place for migration among Europeans. When the city became connected to the Java railroad in 1879, industrialization in Malang was further improved.

Language

 

The Malang people primarily speak Javanese and Madura. The youth, however, use a dialect called “boso walikan.” This is essentially a reversal of how words are originally pronounced. Hence, the word “Malang” becomes “Ngalam.”

Geography

 

252,136 square kilometers is the total area of Malang, Indonesia. The cities of Batu, Lumajang, and Pasuruan surround Malang. To the east of Malang lies Mount Bromo, an active volcano and one of the most well-known tourist destinations in the province of East Java.

People

 

The two predominant races in Malang are Javanese and Madura. The city is also home to an Arabic and Chinese minority. Most Malang people are Muslim, but a small percentage of the population is made up of Buddhists, Catholics, and Hindus. Malang is currently seeing a population growth of over 9% a year.

The Arema Culture

 

Malang, Indonesia possesses a very diverse culture. Being very unique, the city even has a special name for their culture, the Arema culture. This culture is widely a result of the great amount of pride instilled in the Malang residents. The Malang people continuously participate in activities, such as athleticism and playing music, to establish their city as one of the most reputable cultures in Indonesia. Arema is essentially a Malang identity.

Education

Malang, Indonesia is a center for education. The city is home to a number of top schools and universities, such as SMUK Kolese, Santo Yusup and SMAK St. Albertu. Quite a number of Indonesia citizens move to Malang just for schooling purposes.

The city is also popular for its religious education institutions. Malang presently has numerous Islamic schools. Bible seminars are common in the city as well. 

Major Attractions

Malang prides itself in being a center of tourism. One of the city’s most popular attractions is the Kedungmonggo and Jabung villages, where tourists can view the native mask handicrafts. Cultural dances, such as the Tari Topeng and the Jaran Pegon, are also very well-liked.

The city has a few antique shops that will surely be favored by tourists; especially as Malang’s ceramic industry is rapidly growing. Other interesting products, such as vases and batik silk, can also be found all over town.
