Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and befittingly, offers many sights worth taking in when in the city. Most of these places are located in the center of the city which can be covered in a few days’ time, if you can bear the traffic, pollution and heat.
The Istiqlal Mosque is not only famous as one of the largest mosques of Southeast Asia, it is also beautiful. A visit here will give you an idea of the largely Islamic culture of Jakarta. However, visit when the mosque is free, while dressing modestly and on removing shoes.
Visit the Batavia enclave while in Jakarta
The Jembatan Pasar Ayam is the last of the Dutch drawbridges. Though it is not functional, it is worth visiting. It was built in the 17th century to connect the British and Dutch forts located on either sides of the Great Canal.
Of the many attractions found here, the Old Dutch enclave of Batavia is a sight most tourists love exploring for its colonial charisma. There are numerous places to eat, drink and shop in this historical area. And if you want to escape the chaos of modern Jakarta, a visit to the original port of Sunda Kelapa will take you back in time.
Go back in history while in Jakarta
The Maritime Museum located in this port gives you an idea of Jakarta’s maritime heritage. This is one of the many sights that will take you back to the past with the many photographs it boasts of. There is also a watch tower here offering beautiful views of the port and city.
The National Monument lies 130 m over Independence square in the center of Jakarta, symbolizing Indonesia’s freedom from colonial power. As there is always something interesting going on in its base, a visit here is really worth it.
The Taman Ismail Marzuki Arts Center was named after the famous Indonesian musician and hosts the city’s planetarium and Jakarta Institute of Arts. This is the only art center in the country facilitating indoor and outdoor theaters, two art galleries and exhibition halls displaying local and national arts and crafts.
Plan your visit to cover all the tourist attractions
The Vihara Dharma Bhakti is the oldest Buddhist temple that dates back to 1650. This temple was built for Taoism followers where you can always find the smell of incense and burning candles within it.
It is always better to visit these tourist attractions following a planned itinerary, to experience the best of Jakarta, and to ensure that you don’t miss anything in the process.
