Jakarta is a city, and one of the 13,000 islands of the Republic of Indonesia. The population here is over 180 million, and comprises of more than 300 ethnic groups who collectively speak 200 different languages. The city covers most of Greater Jakarta, with an area of 637.44 sq. km. and is located on the northern coast of West Java. It is the center of industry, commerce and government, with a large network with Indonesia and the world.

Being the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta is a confluence of representatives from all these ethnic groups and a city of contrasts with traditional and modern structures, the rich and poor and the sacred and worldly all lying side by side in the city.

Jakarta boasts of a friendly atmosphere

The happy and friendly nature of Indonesians has given a great nightlife to Jakarta. And if you are one of those looking for an interesting nightlife while in Jakarta, you are sure to find some spots worth frequenting.

Bats is a great bar found in The Shangri-la, and is called the hottest spot in town. The bar opens at 9 and serves imported brands to suit your taste. There is a great restaurant attached with great food and is packed most weekends. You can also dance your stress and calories away in its small dancing area.

Some great places to visit at midnight

The O’Reillys is a great bar found at the Grand Hyatt which serves local brands. No point visiting this place before 9 as it is rather quiet. There is some light, live music that is played here; but many people prefer music from a tape or CD.

No visit to Jakarta is complete without a visit to the infamous Tanamur. You have to pay 20,000 to get in, which includes a drink. Subsequent beers here cost 20,000 per beer. However the best time to head here is midnight, and not before it; so the best place for a long night.

JJ’s is found next to Tanamur, which is owned by the same people. There is no entrance fee on week days. The disco space here is small and slightly elevated while there is also an outdoor spot for you to relax. This place is not worth going before midnight either.

The Hard Rock Café offers two floors of great fun and it is one of the best Hard Rock Cafes found in Asia. This is a great place for meeting, drinking and dancing with its great music and friendly atmosphere. This bar is always busy, even if the rest of the town is quiet; it is a great place to visit to experience the nightlife of Jakarta.
