Mumbai is the capital city of Maharashtra. It is located in the western part of India, on Salsette Island. The climate is basically moderate with occasional rainfall. During summer the temperature can rise to more than 30 degrees but will eventually drop to 11 during winters.

It’s known as the land of contradiction because of the presence of neo-classical edifices against the backdrop of slums. There are a great number of poor and high-class families living in Mumbai.

History

Mumbai was formerly called Bombay and was once composed of 7 islands of the Ashoka Kingdom. It was later ruled by the Mohammedans and various Hindu rulers for more than 200 years. Later with the coming of the Europeans, Mumbai was later controlled by the Portuguese.

The city became a dowry to King Charles VI of England when he married Princess Catherine de Braganza of Portugal. This eventually paved the way for the British control especially of Queen Victoria.

Mumbai culture

There are more than 15 million people living in Mumbai. That explains why traffic is heavy most of the time and buildings are slowly showing signs of deterioration. Nevertheless, the people of Mumbai are known to be very happy and friendly individuals. They are currently living near railroad stations and any other public transportation depots so it will be easier for them to commute to and from work.

They also love entertainment as proven by the booming Bollywood industry. Directors and actors can produce hundreds of quality movies every year. There are also plenty of clubs, bars and lounges that you can find all over the metropolis.

Educational Institutions

Mumbai residents follow courses in the fields of science, arts, music, law and engineering. They are some of the most popular fields studied in their colleges and universities. The higher secondary levels meanwhile are run by private individuals or by municipal corporations. Among the educational institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology University of Mumbai and Scottish Church College are the most well-known.

Government

The entire city is under the control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The executive power is given to the municipal commissioner who will run the city together with the mayor. Moreover, the capital is divided into different police zones with IPS officers maintaining peace and order.

 Sports

There are different sports played in Mumbai but the most popular is cricket which can be played on any solid ground. International cricket games are widely anticipated by the people of Mumbai.
