The city of Meerut is a municipal corporation which is part of Meerut District and is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The city of Meerut is around 70 kilometers away from the capital of India, Delhi and this is what increases its importance. Another important reason why the city of Meerut holds an important spot for the government of India is that it has its own army garrison. A theory says that the city of Meerut derived its name from the city named Maya Rashtra which is actually the capital of the huge kingdom which was under the control of Mayasura (father of Mandodari who was the wife of Ravana).
The District of Meerut is made up of around 1025 villages that altogether have the population of around 3.5 million inhabitants. These statistics are as per the census of 1991. The urban population in the city of Meerut was around 1.3 million inhabitants while the rural population in the city of Meerut was around 2.2 million inhabitants. Meerut is amongst those few cities of India which has the largest number of Muslims. As of now, around 32 percent of the total population in the city of Meerut is Muslim. Another important religion being followed in the city of Meerut is Christianity. During the sever riots of 1980s the city of Meerut was amongst the few cities of India that were hit very badly.
