Bombay, India - Overview

Mumbai, formerly Bombay, is a capital of the Indian State of Maharashtra.   Mumbai was renamed after the Hindu goddess Mumbadevi. It is situated at the bank of Ulhas River. There are two distinct regions in Mumbai i.e. the city and the suburbs.  Mumbai is a financial and economical hub of India. 

It’s India’s money-spinning zone. Mumbai plays an important role in India’s economy. There are a lot of job opportunities for those who have talent and skills.  It is one of the most populous cities of the World with a population of more than fifteen million of inhabitants.

Some of the major financial institutes of India are headquartered in Mumbai including Reserve Bank of India, National Stock Exchange of India and Bombay Stock Exchange. There are high-powered corporate offices in the Nariman Point, which is also known as the Manhattan of the city.

Most of the population of Mumbai speaks Marathi but English is very common language there. Mumbai has natural charm and attractions that attract millions of tourists every from all over the world. Mumbai is a favorite destination of the pleasure-seekers and for those who love to have fun with the explorations of the history, culture and traditions of India.

There are a lot of nightclubs, live fashion shows, bars, pubs, amusement arcades, cinemas and theaters. The city of Mumbai has to offer something to all. It also has a lot of places of historical importance. There are hundreds of luxurious hotels, restaurants, swinging bars, museums and sparkling beaches.

Mumbai has hot and humid climate. Initially Mumbai was a group of seven different islands and later these islands merged together to form a peninsula. The artifacts found in Northern Mumbai indicate that these islands have been inhabited since the Stone Age.

In the 1800th century the city was reshaped with the big engineering projects aimed at all islands to merge them into a single amalgamated mass.

There are a lot of transportation options available in Mumbai including railway zones, Mumbai Metro, Mumbai Suburban Railway, rented cars and taxis.

Mumbai residents celebrate major Indian festivals like Holi, Diwali, Good Friday, Maha Shivratri, Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussera and Moharram.

Cricket is the most popular sport of the city. Mumbai has two international cricket stadiums like Brabourne Stadium and Wankhede Stadium. Famous cricketers from Mumbai include Sachin Tendulkar, Vijay Hazare and Sunil Gavaskar.

Mumbai is also home to Indian Television and Film Industry. Bollywood produces a record number of films every year.
