The unofficial capital of the state of Gujarat, Ahmedabad has faced many changes since it was named the capital of Gujarat after the formation of this state in 1960. By 1970, Gandhinagar (the newly planned city of Gujarat government which lies very near to Ahmedabad) was named the capital of Gujarat. But till then Ahmedabad had received the recognition which helped this city grow.

Ahmedabad is famous for its rich historical monuments, art galleries, shopping malls, museums, and uniquely designed modern office buildings. It has quickly developed as a famous tourist spot for various tourists and tourism industry have become an important part of the growing economy of Ahmedabad.

Gandhi Aashram happens to be the most famous tourist spot within Ahmedabad. The real name of this Aashram is Sabarmati Aashram and it was the house of Mahatma Gandhi founded by Mahatma Gandhi somewhere in 1915. Sabarmati Aashram is located near Vadaj. Sabarmati Aashram is located in the proximity of the River Sabarmati and it was called Satyagraha Aashram due to the famous Satyagraha movement of Mahatma Gandhi during the British rule in India.

Sidi Sayed Mosque is another famous tourist attraction for its Jhali (net like) screens that are used on ten different semi-circular windows of the mosque. The unique point of these screens is that they are carved out of one piece of rock.

Akshardham Temple is located about 20 km from Ahmedabad and is famous for its exquisite architecture and rich surroundings. Vaishnodevi Temple is another famous tourist spot which is considered to be the replica of the famous Vaishnodevi temple located near Gandhinagar and on the Gandhinagar Sola Highway.

Kankaria Lake was built somewhere in 1451 by Qutub - ud - Din and it is also amongst the famous tourist spots of Ahmedabad. An island is situated right in the center of lake which enhances the scenery of the location.
