Because of its rich historical past, Szombathely is home to a lot of beautiful and ancient attractions. Szombathely Sights can be classified as Historical Sites or Religious Sites. These tourist spots are sure to delight anyone who visits them.
Szombathely Sights – Historical Sites
Historical sites include museums, and architectural structures. These Szombathely Sights show the magnificent history and culture of the place.
Szombathelyi Keptar. This is the Municipal Art Gallery that was built in 1885. It houses a vast collection of 20th century Hungarian art pieces. Among the exhibits are paintings of Gyula Derkovits and Istvan Desi Huber which date from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s.
Savaria Museum. The structure of this museum was built in the early decade of the 1900’s. This museum has an extensive collection of antiques. The basement houses Savarian mosaics and statues, plus decors which came from the church in Jak. The ground floor has a comprehensive display of the region’s natural history and archaeology.
Vasi Muzeumfalu. The English name of this place is Vas Country Museum Village. It is located at the western part of the city and it covers 15 acres of land. This was considered the settlement of the Slovenians starting from the 9th century. This open-air museum includes rural architecture and farmhouses. It also has a fish pond and a windmill.
Szombathely Sights – Religious Sites
Religious sites include churches and other places of worship. These Szombathely Sights speak of the city’s cultural heritage and different architectural styles.
Csempeszkopacs. This site can be found at the southern part of the city. It is a church village patterned from the Romanesque architectural style. The southern entrance of this church has a resemblance to the one in Jak and it has jagged Norman ornaments. Relics Baroque and medieval frescoes can be seen inside this Christian site.
Franciscan Church. This site is located east of Koztarsasag ter. The structure has different architectural styles. The foundation was built in the 14th century and it used to be a Gothic structure. In the 17th century, it was reconstructed into a Baroque style church. The entrance is of Renaissance style and a statue of St. Elizabeth is on top of the doorway. The interior is Baroque and the left side altar bears the image of St. Florian.
Iseum. This is one of the oldest sites in the city. Iseum used to be the place of worship of oriental deities. This archeological site has the remains of the Isis temple from 188. Its treasures are the ancient doorway and pillars dating from the 2nd century.
Szombathely Cathedral. This is one of the most beautiful religious sites in the city. The structure was constructed from the late 1700’s and was finished in the early 1800’s. The façade reveals a mix of Late Baroque and Classicism styles of architecture. The interior is a fascinating ornate Baroque. Statues of Moses, apostles Peter and Paul, and John the Baptist that are made by Philipp Prokop can be seen at the altar or at the frontage of the cathedral.
Szombathely Sights are really worth exploring like those of Zagreb Sights in Croatia and Graz Sights in Austria. They show the history and culture of the city. In addition to that, they bring knowledge and enjoyment to the sightseers.
