Szentendre Sights – A Fascinating Town on the Danube Banks

Szentendre is not surprisingly a major tourist destination in Hungary. Lying on the banks of the Danube and stretching right up to the feet of the Pilis Mountains, a spectacular landscape surrounds this little town. Very close to Budapest – just a twenty minute drive by car – and due to its easy accessibility by almost any means of transport (even by ship), Szentendre is a compulsory day-trip for the visitors coming to the capital and admiring the famous Budapest Sights and Budapest Nightlife. Szentendre, with its tranquility and vividness at the same time, with its unique Mediterranean atmosphere and sparkling art-life, is a real attraction in itself.

Szentendre Sights – Wandering Around Town

Once you have been in Szentendre, you cannot wonder why it is called the town of arts and museums. Tens of museum and art galleries welcome you here in this small town of 20,000 people. Since the 20th century, numerous artists were driven here, inspired by the serenity and beauty of the town and its surroundings.

The Open-Air Ethnographic Museum, with exhibits reflecting the folklore architecture and culture of the Carpathian basin, is probably the most renowned one of the several museums. Visitors can view the artworks of the Ferenczy family at the Károly Ferenczy Museum, exhibits of surreal visual arts at the Anna Margit – Ámos Imre Collection, and painting and sculpture collections at the same time at the János Kmetty Museum - Kerényi Collection.

Furthermore, the Margit Kovács Museum displaying ceramic works, the Art Mill, the Serbian Orthodox Museum, the Doll Museum – and the list could go on – are all worth visiting.

You also have to see the Greek-Orthodox Blagovestenska church, built in Baroque-Rococo style, which is the most renowned of the nine churches in Szentendre. The House of Prisoner Ráby cannot be missed either, a Baroque styled house whose once tenant and his story were the inspiration for the great Hungarian writer Mór Jókai to write his famous novel Rab Ráby on.

The list of Szentendre Sights has still not come to an end. You will have a nice time walking on the cobblestone streets, viewing the intimate merchant houses, the Main Square, dropping by the shops - the Paprika Ház for instance - abundant of Hungaricums, tasting the local cuisine, going on a trip to the neighboring Pilis Mountains… a few examples to mention from the numerous to-sees and to do-s in Szentendre, which will turn your visit into a real recreation.
