Nyiregyhaza History – Origin of the Name

In 1209, the town of Nyiregyhaza was first cited. However, during that time the name of the town was still Nyir which means “birch.” According to sources, the town already had a church or “egyhaz” in 1326. The two names were combined, thus the name of the town, Nyiregyhaza.

Nyiregyhaza History – Population from the 15th to 17th Century

The town’s population grew to 400 inhabitants during the 15th century. However, when the Turks invaded Hungary in the 16th century, residents left Nyiregyhaza. People only started to go back to the town between the 1630s and 1640s when the Ottoman Empire declined.

Nyiregyhaza History – 18th Century

The number of residents in Nyiregyhaza increased following the so-called War of Independence commanded by Prince Francis Rakoczi II. The Tirpaks from Bekescsaba were one of the groups that settled in town. With 7,500 residents, Nyiregyhaza became the largest town in the county during the 1780s because in 1786, the town was accorded the privilege to organize 4 market days in a year.

Nyiregyhaza History – 19th Century

The feudal lords from the clans of Dessewffy and Karolyi lost their hold of the town during the dawn of the 19th century. This was mainly due to the fact that Nyiregyhaza became so prosperous that it no longer needed these lords. As the town flourished, hospitals, schools and restaurants were constructed. Along with these new buildings, a new town hall was also built.

During the Revolution and War of Independence between 1848 and 1849, the people of Nyiregyhaza joined the fight for liberation. After the repression, a number of citizens including Mayor Marton Hatzel were imprisoned.

Nyiregyhaza experienced development and progress through urbanization and industrialization. Another set of buildings were constructed during this time including a telegraph and main post office and a theater. In 1876, it became the capital of Szabolcs.

Nyiregyhaza History – 20th Century

Nyiregyhaza suffered during the First World War. It fell under the control of Romania for ten months following the war. During World War II, Jewish residents of the city, which totaled to more than 6,000, were exiled. Some 2,000 other inhabitants were taken to Russian labor camps. A number of buildings in town were damaged during the war.

The 60s came with growth and development of the city. At present, Nyiregyhaza is one of the wealthiest cities in Hungary and an educational center as well. It is also a well-liked tourist destination.
