La Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción is the original name of Guatemala City. It is Guatemala’s capital and happens to be its largest city. Moreover, Guatemala City is the largest city in North America and it is also the capital of Guatemala Department. The biggest reason for the high population of Guatemala City is the migrants which enter the city every now and then to settle down or to earn a living.

People of Mestizo and Spanish descent dominate Guatemala City while people from Jewish, German, and Korean descent are found in small numbers.

Guatemala City is an important cultural, governmental, and economic hub of the country. It also boasts of an International Airport which happens to be the largest airport of the country. The city is famous for its museums and art galleries thus attracting huge number of art lovers towards itself. Multiple hotels and restaurants are always ready to serve the needs of various tourists. All these features make Guatemala City a famous tourist spot.

The most interesting feature of Guatemala City is its division into many zones. Every zone contains various monuments or places which tourists can visit. This division of tourist spots helps the tourists to divide their time and plan their schedule in a structured manner to enjoy their stay in the capital of Guatemala. There are around 10 zones in the Guatemala City. Zone ten is also known as Zone Viva. It is the financial section of Guatemala City as it posses many restaurants, hotels, discotheques, bars, and other ways to entertain the public. Moreover, one will find most of the International embassies in Zone Ten.

The only turn off which visitors might face in Guatemala City is its transportation facilities. Although underpasses and freeways were built by the municipality to regulate the traffic, it couldn’t bring in any major changes in the city’s traffic. Recently a project namely Transmetro was approved by the government of Guatemala. Under this project special lanes will be built for the large sized buses of the city. These high capacity buses will run non-stop thus carrying passengers from one place to other without hampering the city’s traffic.

Guatemala City has faced many natural disasters in the past and it has still stood up to face the challenges ahead and thus it has become the important backbone of the country.
