In 1216, the abbess of Essen was given the title Reichsf├╝rstin (Princess of the Empire). After twenty-eight years, the Archbishop of Cologne Konrad von Hochstaden captured Essen, instituted Essen as a town, and erected a wall that temporarily freed the people from the rule of the princess-abbesses.
