Porvoo Sights and Landmarks Guide, Finland

On January 01, 1997, the city of Porvoo and the Municipality of Porvoo were merged. The unification is known as the City of Porvoo. The collective resources of the city have made Porvoo an ideal destination for travelers who are keen about culture and wonderful ambiance. Porvoo is the second oldest town in Finland and is a really exquisite place to go for a vacation. Porvoo Sights provide an idea of what is in store for every vacationer.

Porvoo Sights – Churches

Porvoo’s churches may not be as grand as other European churches – like those listed in Helsinki Sights - but they are some of the sights to explore in the country. Many tourists visit these churches.

Porvoo Cathedral. This cathedral is undoubtedly the most famous tourist destination in Porvoo and the third most admired church in Finland. The cathedral, built in devotion to Jesus’ mother Mary, acquired its current appearance at the end of the 1400s. Every summer, a series of music concerts are held in the church every Thursday.

Orthodox Church. The clean looking façade of the Orthodox Church in the city is a sight to see. Add to this, visitors are keen to experience the yearly festival called Praasniekka held every August 5 and 6. The church is open for visitors from the 1st of June to the 15th of August between 1pm and 6pm.

Porvoo Sights – Cultural Sites

The city of Porvoo is recognized as a cultural destination. This is mainly due to the fact that there are a number of noteworthy galleries and museums found in the city.

JL Runeberg’s Home. The former residence of the National poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg now serves as a home museum and is open for public viewing since 1882. Visitors are able to get a taste of the life Runeberg’s family had through the collections displayed throughout the house. The collections include works of art, fox-skin displays and porcelain wares.

Porvoo Doll and Toy Museum. Considered as one of the finest toy museums in Finland, the collections in this museum are toys which were once owned and must have been played at one point. The private collection of the museum is open to the public every summer only. However, groups who want to visit the museum at another time may call for reservations anytime of the year.

Porvoo Sights – Leisure Sites

Porvoo city also offers places for relaxation, sports, and recreation. Tourists are sure to enjoy these Porvoo Sights, the way they do enjoy Turku Sights.

Kokoniemmi Ski Center. The ski center has a total of four slopes. Three of these slopes are lighted. The slopes vary in height and difficulty. Excluding the slopes, Kokonniemi also has a ski rental shop, four lifts, ski school, and a ski trail.

Kungsbacka Domestic Animal Farm. This tourist attraction is always a hit to children who want a taste of farm life and mingle with domesticated animals. There are goats, chickens, cows, donkeys, pigs and sheep in the farm.

All travelers – young and old alike – are sure to take pleasure in the scenic views of Porvoo. The city truly boasts of everything that it owns.
