An Overview of Jyvaskyla, Finland

Jyvaskyla is a municipality and city in Central Finland at a distance of 270 kms from Helsinki and 147 kms from Tampere, near the Keitele and Paijanne lakes. The city is the center of Jyvaskyla region and being the place of many educational firsts of Finland, it is also known as the city of schools. The city is also popular for its several buildings that Alvar Aalto designed. The city features an annual Jyvaskyla Arts Festival every year.

By 2004 end, the city’s population was around 83,500 and Jyvaskyla’s rural municipality has its own town hall, a beautiful church and a graveyard, all of which are conveniently situated in the central Jyvaskyla. The region of Jyvaskyla includes Toivakka, Muurame, Laukaa, Jyvaskylan Maalaiskunta and Jyvaskyla. The rate of unemployment of Jvaskyla is about 13%.

Education: Due to its educational firsts including being the city for the first Summer University in Finland and first Finnish-speaking girls’ school, the city has been given the nickname of Athens of Finland. The Jyvaskyla University is the most famous university in Finland and nearly 16000 students get enrolled in it for studying their Bachelor’s or Master’s education. PhD programs are also offered in the university on most of the subjects. This is the only university of Finland which offers university level education in sports and training coaches and sports teachers. The Jyvaskyla University’s physics department offers education and performs research at the highest possible international level of accelerator and nuclear based physics, high energy physics and material physics. Apart from that, the department also hosts a program for teachers’ education.

Transportation: The Jyvaskyla railway station has been served by the direct VR trains to Pieksamaki, Helsinki, Tampere, Vaasa and Turku and the station has been extensively modernized during the year 2002. The Jyvaskyla Airport situated in Tikkakoski had been expanded during 2004 and it has been situated around 20 kms from Jyvaskyla.
