Nadi, Fiji- overview

Nadi is the third largest city in Fiji and is situated on the western part of the island of Viti Levu. The population of Nadi was estimated to be around 42,284 in the year 2007. Nadi is inhabited by a large number of Indians and Fijians and many multiracial tourists as well. The main industry is sugar cane production and tourism. Therefore, the city has the highest number of hotels in Fiji. The city is a hub for Hinduism and Islam in Fiji with most of its population comprising of Indo-Fijian.

The city’s centre is marked by the Nadi River on the west and the Sri Siva Subramaniya temple on the east. The Sri Siva Subramaniyam temple is the largest Hindu temple in the southern region of Fiji.

Transportation

The Nadi International Airport is the largest airport in Fiji. The international airlines which serve the Nadi International Airport are "Air Pacific, Pacific Blue, Korean Air and Air New Zealand". The domestic airlines which serve the Nadi Airport are “Pacific Sun, Air Fiji and Air Wakaya". Therefore, Nadi is the main place of entry for air travelers going to Fiji. You can also rent cars to explore the city on your own or you can also use the local bus service.

Weather-

Nadi experiences a tropical climate with an average temperature ranging from 31 degrees Celsius to 26 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Nadi experiences mild winters with evenings and mid-morning being cold. To visit Nadi, the best months would be from March to November. The South-East trade winds bring a high level of rainfall with the mountainous regions receiving the maximum rainfall. The months of November till April are mostly characterized by moist and wet climatic conditions. Fiji annually receives approximately 2000mm to 3000mm of rainfall on the coast and about 6000mm of rainfall in the mountain region. The city also experiences cyclones from the month of November to February.

Economy-

Nadi’s economy is mostly based on natural resources such as wood and fish. It has the largest sector of natural resources in the entire Pacific Island. The state is also blessed with a large amount of sugar manufacturing which makes it a leading exporter of sugar. Tourism is another industry in Fiji that is an important source of revenue.

Festivals-

Nadi has a population mostly comprises of Hindus, Muslims and Christians therefore there are a variety of festivals celebrated throughout the year. The festivals range from annual cultural festivals to religious festivals because of the wide diversity of people living in the state. The various city festivals celebrated in Nadi are; "The Bula Festival" celebrated in the month of July, "The Hibiscus Festival" organized in Suva in the month of November. But the most popular festival is the "Sugar Festival" which is famous for its bands and beauty contests.
