Alexandria is one of the largest cities in the country and is home to the largest seaport in Egypt. Alexandria's port passes over 80% of the exports and imports for the country through. In days gone by, Alexandria was one of the most well known cities in the entire world. It has been listed in many history books as one of the most crucial areas in the development of modern day Egypt. Many ancient sites are in Alexandria. You can find the Roman Amphitheater, “Pompey's Pillar”, or the remains of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, which at one time was considered to be one of the 7 Wonders of the World.

Alexandria is home to many libraries and museums. The Royal Library of Alexandria is located in the city. This was once considered the largest library in the entire world. Most think its beginnings can be traced back to the 3rd Century BC. Over the years, there have been many debates over the fires the have consumed part of the precious manuscripts. Many do not agree on the amount of destruction, or the cause. Of the many beautiful museums, The Alexandria National Museum is the best to explore the fascinating past of the country.

While the beautiful and bustling city of Alexandria may not seem very modern, it really is. Though there are some ancient remains and discoveries of late, most of ancient Alexandria is gone. Most of the royal headquarters for Alexandria have sank below the harbor. Many buildings have simply crumbled and fallen over time. However, since the 1800's, many new discoveries have been found in Alexandria and are being excavated or preserved. One such area is the Alexandrian Catacombs. This find has been said to have a multi level labyrinth of rooms and sarcophaguses. These ancient burial rooms were the sites of many remembrance dinners, for the rich and famous upon their death.
