Santiago De Cuba Sights and Landmarks Guide, Cuba

The Majestic Sites of Santiago de Cuba in Cuba

Cuba is a beautiful country and despite its poverty and the ill will that many have against this country, it is still an inspiring place to visit.  Santiago de Cuba is not one of the most well known cities like Havana and Guantanamo but it does hold some of Cuba’s greatest touristic and historic sites.  Most of these buildings and monuments that you will see in Santiago de Cuba have remained untouched over the years and more beautifully preserved than in other parts of the country and in the world.

A famous monument in Santiago de Cuba is the Antonio Maceo Grajales Monument.  Maceo  was a Lieutenant general in the Cuban Army in the late 19th Century.  He was a courageous soldier and leader that led to building this commemorative monument.

In addition to Santiago de Cuba’s preserved history, you can visit the Castillo del Morro which is a beautiful Spanish built castle and fortress that looks over the Bay.  There are tours of this spectacular castle available to tourists.  Castillo del Morro is encapsulated by the city Pedro de la Roca y Borja.  It has been deemed an UNESCO World heritage Site.  This happened in 1997.  The UNESCO deemed it so because it was the perfect example of the most preserved and designed model of military architecture during that time (around 1600s).

Another place that many go for worship and architectural beauty is to the Cathedral in Santiago de Cuba.   It is beautiful and very well preserved.  Many people like it for its tranquil colors of white and rose with two large capsule towers as well as an angel that looks over the entrance.

Besides these historic buildings, there are various museums around the city as well as monuments.  There are many dedicated to José Martí who was the father of the Cuban independence movement.  You can visit his burial grounds as they are located in Santiago de Cuba.  For a relaxing day, you may just want to take a breezy walk down by the bay considering Santiago de Cuba is also a major port city in Cuba.
