Las Tunas travel guide

Las Tunas is one of Cuba’s provinces. It is located on the northeastern coast of the island. With a surface of 6 584 km² in the northeast of Cuba, the province of Las Tunas has recently become part of the international tourism of the West Indies. Its major contribution to the world wide touristic destinations is represented by the 35 unspoiled beaches, the perfect place where to sunbath.

One of the main economic activities in the province are cattle breeding and the production of sugar.

There are references about the province of Las Tunas since 1510. It was only in the XVIII century that people began to populate the province. In 1759 the basis of the city of Las Tunas was found.

Many of the sites that are to be found in the province make reference to the war of independence that the Cuban people started in the XIX century. Tourits can visit the General Vicente García Museum. There are also other sites such as the Fort of La Loma (National Monument). The monument consists of huge defensive walls in stone, that were made during the Spanish government in order to put a stop to the Cuban army in the independence wars. The Fort of La Loma is built in Puerto Padre, which began to develop in the 1860’s. The settlement is famous for a spring located near the sea shore.

Also in the municipality of Jesús Menéndez there are well-known mineral springs used in medicinal purposes. Tourits can visit the largest reservation of American alligators that live in the Caribbean basin.

Las Tunas is the place where Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo was born. He was a representative bucolic poet. As a way of showing their appreciation to this important figure of Las Tunas, the inhabitants of the province celebrate each year Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo, known also as “el Cucalambé “ in the Jornada Cucalambeana. If it happens to be there, you will enjoy good Cuban music as artists and singers from Cuba pay a homage to the literary work of the poet.

The province of Las Tunas is famous for its pristine beaches. So, if you want to lay back, relax and enjoy sun, nothing compares with a day spent on one of the 30 beautiful beaches. Only Covarrubias beach, with white sand and guarded by a 3 km Coral Reef welcomes its guests from all over the world. This is the only beach that offers facilities to international tourists with a 120-room hotel.

The province of Las Tunas is also a birds’ paradise. At Malagueta Bay tourists can watch a great variety of birds, ranging from ducks to pink flamingoes and pelicans.
