There is lot’s to do in Alajuela in Costa Rica.  This is the second largest city in Costa Rica with an approximate population of 50,000.  It is only a half hour away from San José by bus and buses pass through the two cities very frequently.  There are local and direct buses available.

If you are going to be in Alajuela, there are a few sites that you should certainly check out. One of the first stops should be at the Parque Central or Central park.  It is one of the most beautiful parks in Costa Rica.  There is a water fountain that was imported from Glasgow in Scotland.  Surrounding the fountain and the rest of the park are a variety of different trees including mango trees and palm trees.

You should then stop by one of the various homages to Juan Santamaría, Costa Rica’s national hero.  There is the Juan Santamaría Park and the Museo Juan Santamaría (the Juan Santamaría Museum).

Then head over to the best zoo in Costa Rica with over 120 species of birds.  The Zoo Ave or Bird Zoo, is a breeding grounds for birds which are endangered and rare.  These species of birds that you will see include the aracari, the quetzal, ostriches and eagles.  Other animals that you will see include monkeys, turtles, lions, hawks, tigers, crocodiles, macaws, toucans and parrots.  If you enjoyed the Bird Zoo then you can try the Finca de Mariposas or the Butterfly Farm in English.  Here you will see over 40 different types of butterflies.

In terms of natural beauty, you will have to visit Poás Volcano National Park.  You can drive all the way to the top of the volcano.  It is 8,800 feet high and is still active.  There is an exquisite blue green colored crater lake with a 1,000 foot deep crater which also happens to be one of the world’s largest active craters.  There is also a forest with various walking trails that will lead you to various other sites in this national park.  You can see an extinct crater, the Laguna Botos (Botos Laguna), Sendero Escalonia and the La Paz Waterfall Gardens.   The Poás Volcano National Park is recommended to everyone.  It is one of the most stunning places to go in Costa Rica for its outdoor beauty.   There is tons to do in Alajuela.  Whether you like the city or the country, there is something here for everyone.
