Liberia, Costa Rica Overview

  Liberia, Costa Rica is located in Guanacasta province.  It is about four hours away from San Jose and is home to about 35,000 people.  It’s a rather large city compared to the other two towns in the general area.  There are several things to do and see in this town and it is home to a large festival and expo in July that celebrates Guanacasta’s Annexation in 1824.

During the last part of February and the first half of March each year, the Fiestas Civicas de Liberia is held.  This has a Tico style bullfight, which means there are 300 people and one bull.  If you are interested in attending this festival, you need to get a hotel reservation as far in advance as possible.

Liberia is along the way to several of Costa Rica’s famous beaches, such as Playa del Coco and Playa Hermosa.  The city’s main crossroads offer some typical American fast food, including a 24 hour Subway shop.  There is a new attraction available here as well.  An Africa safari, named Africa Mia. 

The city’s airport, Daniel Oduber Airport is located about four miles from the city, on the road leading to Nicoya.  This airport is the second international airport found in Costa Rica, with the other being in near San Jose.  This airport offers flights in and out of Los Angeles, London, Chicago, and Toronto, just to name a few.

The Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park can be found just northwest of the city.  There are wonderful hiking trails and many bubbling clay pots and hot springs found here.  You will also see several waterfalls.  This truly is a beautiful place to visit.

Costa Rica has some of the most beautiful sites in the world located on this island.  The entire country is terrific for a getaway.
