Alajuela, Costa Rica Overview

Alajuela is the capital of the Alajuela province in Costa Rica and is the second largest city in the country.  It is located in the metropolitan area of San Jose and over 220,000 people live here.   Alajuela has a slightly warmer climate than that of San Jose and can be a pleasant get away from that busy city. 

There are several things to do and see in Alajuela, including the Juan Santamaria Museum.  This small museum is actually housed in what was the old city jail.  There are some interesting artifacts on display here.  April 11th each year is celebrated in memory of Juan Santamaria and his sacrifice to Costa Rica.

In the Juan Santamaria Park, there a statue of this great man.  Close by, you will find Central Park, which if full of mango trees.  A beautiful fountain imported from Scotland is located here as well.

  Just a few feet away from here is a 19th century Cathedral that is the final resting place of two of Costa Rica’s former presidents.

On Saturdays, you can find an open air market, full of fish, meats, and other goods.  Many people come from all over the town to do their shopping and see their neighbors. 

 One of the most beautiful attractions in the area is the Poas Volcano National Park.  You’re able to drive to the top and can look across the world’s largest active volcanic craters.  This is one of the most beautiful areas in all of Costa Rica and is recommended to all.  You will have access to walking trails that can lead you to other sites inside the national park. You can also look at an extinct crater, Laguna Botos.  Another terrific site to see is the Laz Paz Waterfall Gardens, located close to Alajuela.
