Xuzhou City is located in the northwest region of Jiangsu Province in China. The city is a major transportation hub in the country, with the north-south rail line between Beijing and Shanghai and the east-west rail line from Lianyungang to Urumqi intersecting in Xuzhou. The city dates back to more than 2,600 years ago and had been a major area of battlefield in the country. It is believed that more than 200 battles took place in this area but the city still retains most of its historical sites and scenic attractions with little damage to them.
The city is a hilly area with a peak of 361 meters height, known as the summit of Dadong Hill, situated in the city. However, the uniqueness of the city is in the more than 200 rivers flowing within the city limits. The city also boasts of 2 lakes and 91 artificial reservoirs. The 2 lakes are called Lake Luoma and Lake Weishan.
Xuzhou jurisdiction controls 11 divisions, with 2 cities, 4 counties, and 5 districts. The cities are Pizhou City and Xinyi City. The 4 counties are Tongshan, Suining, Pei and Feng. The 5 districts are named Gulou, Jiuli, Yunlong, Jiawang, and Quanxhan. The jurisdiction is over a land mass of 11,260 square kilometers. The population in the entire area is nearly 10 million. The city population is about 2 million, with more than a million people living in the proper urban area of the city.
Traditionally, Xuzhou had an agrarian economy. However, agriculture has been declining slowly over the years, with a contribution of only 3% of the city GDP at present. Rice, cotton, wheat, fruits, vegetable, and oil seeds are the primary agricultural produce. The industrialization of the area witnessed a good growth, in the range of 14% to 17% increase in the industrial GDP in the past 5 years. Coal is a major mineral from the area, which is having one of the largest coal reserves in the entire region. Electricity and energy production industries had mushroomed in recent times due to the plentiful availability of coal. However, several industries in the area had been either shut down or are being closely monitored due to the large scale pollution of the area in the last few years. Drinking water of the city and the fish stocks of the fishermen had been severely hit by the coal pollution. Marble, lime, and salt are the other natural resource products in Xuzhou area.
Xuzhou Education and Culture
Xuzhou has got about 11 institutions for higher learning, the most important among them being China University of Mining & Technology. Xuzhou Normal University, Xuzhou Medical College, and Xuzhou Institute of Technology are the other notable higher education centers. Xuzhou traces its heritage to the Han Culture, with more than 200 Han tombs and thousands of relics of terracotta soldiers and funerary objects unearthed in this area. All these items are on display in the museums of Xuzhou. The excavations of the Han cultural relics in the Lion Mountain in 1995 are considered as very important archeological findings in China.
