The industrialization of the area witnessed a good growth, in the range of 14% to 17% increase in the industrial GDP in the past 5 years. Coal is a major mineral from the area, which is having one of the largest coal reserves in the entire region. Electricity and energy production industries had mushroomed in recent times due to the plentiful availability of coal. However, several industries in the area had been either shut down or are being closely monitored due to the large scale pollution of the area in the last few years. Drinking water of the city and the fish stocks of the fishermen had been severely hit by the coal pollution. Marble, lime, and salt are the other natural resource products in Xuzhou area.
