The city is set in beautiful scenery sheltered by the mountains on one side and by the sea on the other side. Being set near the sea shore, local topography is plain without major changes in altitude. The beach line on the other hand combines a few deep water bays with long stripes of sand and faces small islands which rise from the turquoise waters at the horizon.

Climate in Quanzhou is subtropical with strong oceanic and monsoon influences. Precipitations are unevenly distributed throughout the year with a maximum in the wet season and a minimum in the dry one but without any extremes. The annual average temperature is of 20ºC which makes the city a great tourist destination all year round.

The presence of the sea shore is a great resource for the city, regarding fishing industry, transportation and tourism as well as Jinjiang River which crosses the city.

Within the city tourists can observe a great sight created by the contact between the old city quarters which abound in vegetation, looking like an emerald sea from which the shining tops of the pagodas rise shyly and the grey contemporaneous area with its high metal and glass buildings. Fauna is mainly present on the less industrialized sea shores and in the waters of the Jinjiang River. Numerous species of birds, insects, fish, mollusks, amphibians and more are sheltered by this special area where the land meets the sea.

Ouanzhou houses about 8 million people and is one of the most important economic centers in China. Locals are mainly Han with an overwhelming percent of 98% and speak Mandarin Chinese. Once a flourishing city due to its location by the sea at one end of the Silk Road, Quanzhou remained in the Chinese history as one of the biggest maritime ports and trade centers in China. Nowadays fishing industry plays a very important role as well as the aquatic cultures, agriculture and last but not least water transportation. The large number of religious and historical vestiges as well as the presence of the nearby mountains transforms the city into an important tourist destination.

Dragon Boat Festival and Qingming Festival are the main such events in the first half of the year, gathering numerous locals on the streets and different local artists on the stages. Mid Autumn Festival is yet another important event here taking place in September and cherishing nature and family.
