Nanking, China is the capital of the Jiangsu Province and holds a very prominent position in Chinese history. It is located in the Yangtze River Delta and is one of the four great ancient capital cities of china. Considered one of China’s most important metropolises, it is home to over five million people. Nanking has been a national hub of transportation, research, education, and tourism throughout China’s history.
Probably one of the most important facts in history about this great city is the Nanking Massacre. In 1937, the Japanese army invaded Nanking and took control. The army then began to systematically kill the occupants. It is estimated that 200,000 to 350,000 people were killed. In 1985, construction was completed on the Nanking Massacre Memorial Hall to remember this event.
Nanking has become a thriving industrial center for mint and textile. During the Ming Dynasty, its industry grew and with such, Nanking became one of China’s most prosperous cities. Shipbuilding, printing, textile and mint were the main industries during this period. However, as Nanking moved into the 20th century, Nanking shifted into a heavy consumption city. Many large departments stores, as well as theaters and restaurants, would draw in more revenue for the city that the service industries.
During the 1950s Nanking, built a series of heavy industries. Steel factories and electrical, mechanical, and chemical manufacturing plants were completed. Much money was also funneled into the search for coal, which was never found. This however, resulted in negative economic growth during the next decade.
Today, Nanking is a tourism based city. There is something for everyone, including operas and theaters, monuments and historical sites, and a great diversity for restaurants and nightlife. The city is once again building, but should be considered as a destination when you plan your next getaway.
