Kunming Travel Guide, China

Capital city for province of Yunnan, the city of Kunming has priority below the administration of Yunnan but it has priority above any county of Yunnan. Such a city is called as prefecture level city of China. Kunming is situated in the South Western part of People’s Republic of China.

The city of Kunming is spread over an area of around 21600 kilometer square and has a population of around 5 million inhabitants as per the census of year 2006. This population is made up of around 25 different ethnic groups and the major minority is the Han group which has the population of more than 4 million inhabitants. The rest of the population is made up of small chunks from the other minorities.

Kunming is amongst those cities of China which have the balanced male to female ratio. It is around 1.05:1 in the city of Kunming while this ratio is 1.5:1 in many other provinces of China. This has happened due to the one child policy of China but somehow the city of Kunming has tried its best to avoid the consequences of this policy.

A legend of this city says that there used to be a golden horse and a green rooster that had come from the sun and the moon respectively. They had such powers that green trees would grow and flowers would start blooming on the pathways from which they would pass. Lastly they settled the sides of Lake Dianchi. On one side of the lake is Jinma Hill (which is considered to be the symbol for Golden Horse) and on the other side is the Biji Hill (which is considered to be the symbol for Green Rooster). The legend is so important for the city of Kunming that the emblem for the city contains the images of Golden Horse and Green Rooster.

The city of Kunming has its unique importance on the map of China as it is a major stopping point for the seagulls from Siberia who travel to the southern part of the city. Thousands of seagulls have been traveling to this city for more than 15 years and this has truly increased the importance of Kunming for the wildlife lovers. The city of Kunming is famous in China for its horticulture and green surroundings.
