The Sights of Hong Kong
To the Hong Kong bound the city is a seeming urban jungle of skyscrapers and harbor views but if you look closely it’s not at all what it seems. There are parks to explore, beaches to visit and of course shops to splurge on. It’s a destination for the tourist who wants to be surprised and entertained. Here’s a taste of what to expect from a city where the east meets west.
Going Around the City
Hong Kong’s transportation system is a tourist’s dream. In fact all you need to get around most of the city is through the convenient Octopus Card which can be used in all forms of public transport except taxis and red minibuses. You can even use this card to pay for purchases in some convenience stores and restaurants.
You can travel around the city by train quickly, but you might miss out on the great views. A great alternative are trams which are the city’s icon. It’s the best way to capture the city’s views at a lower cost. There are also buses that can take you around the city especially if you’re heading south. Take the ferry by day or night if you want to enjoy the amazing harbor views of Hong Kong. But if you want to get a ride quickly, taxis are everywhere when you need one. Renting a car is an option but why travel by car when you have so many ways to get around.
Must-See Attractions
You cannot leave Hong Kong without seeing it in its breathtaking beauty just by visiting Victoria Peak. You can take the Peak Tram at the Central line from the bottom of Peak Tower to get there. Do take the time to take in the sights and visit shops, restaurants and museums around the area.
To get to know the city better, it’s best to visit Hong Kong Museum of History at Chatham Road. This museum showcases the city’s history through interesting exhibits that relive it’s colorful past.
The newest Disneyland on the block is Hong Kong Disneyland in Lantau Island. The park only opened its doors in 2005 and has been a tourist hotspot ever since. No one is too old to visit such a fun wholesome place.
If you want an escape from the busy city streets, take the bus and head to the New Territories where the urban beaches of the city can be found. The beaches here are well preserved and have the conveniences that satisfy any beach lover. All beaches in the area have shower and changing areas for everyone to use. One of the largest and most popular urban beaches is Repulse Bay which attracts tourists and residents alike.
Hong Kong is a great place for some retail therapy. It’s one of the world’s best shopping destinations. If you’re willing to go upscale, then you must shop at Causeway Bay which is the place of Hong Kong’s fashion scene. But if you’re a true bargain hunter, it’s best to shop at Kowloon’s Nathan Road where you can shop for electronics, cameras, cell phones and even clothes at bargain prices.
Hong Kong is a tourist wonder that never ceases to amaze, entertain and leave its visitors wanting for more.

Victoria Harbour >> added on November 16, 2009, by erato
This is something you definitely must see if you are in Hong Kong. Voctoria Harbour is simply fabulous and very busy. This is the greatest view onto the city you can ever imagine.
You can see like fourty skyscrapers from here and the whole vital pulse of this amazing city. You can walk on the shore and admire the view, but I would recommend to see the place from the water.
You can take the Harbour's cruise, the Star Ferry, which is very modern and ideal for those who like comfort, or, which is even better, you can take a ride in a traditional Chinese junk, a special boat with red sailes, it is amazing! To be honest, neither of these is cheap (except for the walking), but if you can afford it, you really shouldn't miss to see the Harbour.
If you go late in the evening, you can witness something even more spectacular, the so called Symphony og Lights, when all the skyscrapers of Hong Kong extravagantly flodlitted in very many colours. It's just wonderful!
