Peterborough, ON Canada - Overview

“Nature Provides, Industry Develops” is a motto for Peterborough city that is located on the Otonabee River in central-eastern Ontario, Canada. In 2006, this city had a population of 74,898, while 116,570 is the number for the census metropolitan area (CMA). Statistics show that it increases with 5-10 percent per year. Peterborough is known in ranks as the 33rd largest CMA in Canada. The current mayor is Paul Ayotte. It is formerly known as the gateway to the “cottage country” of the Kawartas.

The main stream for local industry here is manufacturing with General Electric and Quaker Oats. These two industries have contributed to the name of “electric city”. Peterborough Regional Health Centre is the largest employer, second-school boards and followed by local government. Peterborough that is governed by a mayor council system is a single tier municipality. The Mayor of Peterborough is elected by popular vote to become the chief executive of the city.

The city of Peterborough is located 78 miles towards  the north east of Toronto and is bridged between Highway 115 and the cross-roads with Highway 7 which is known as the By-Pass of Peterborough.

Peterborough also well known for its attractions and richness of heritage. For the landmarks, Peterborough offered a grouping of events and attractions for all type such as an amazing array of museums and indoor and outdoor galleries. Other than that, Peterborough also has cultural exhibitions as well as Aboriginal heritage attractions and historical sites. The Peterborough Centennial Museum and Archives is a location to a diverse collection of artifacts. It was established in 1897 and moved to its present site on Armour Hill in 1967. It has many archives for seekers.

Formerly known for its junior level hockey team, the Peterborough Petes of the OHL has become the longest nonstop operating team in the league. They are currently in their 53rd Ontario Hockey League season (2008/09). The Petes have produced a record number of National Hockey League players. They have also graduated the most players to the NHL of all current OHL teams.

 Peterborough has many hotels that can offer you good prices. It is also well known for its great taste of food. Tourists can easily adapt to this city and the excitement waiting for them.
